STEP 1. When starting off with the shape of the foot, it's best to sketch the basic frame that the foot will mold into. I would suggest referencing various poses of feet and the forms they differ from. As you reference, sketch the frame/shape of the desired foot pose quickly, using sharp edges as you progress with the formation, will definitely speed up the process. These are called warm ups.   STEP 2. From the shapes presented above, I resulted with these finished feet. See how the shape of the initial guideline progresses into these finely shaped feet? It takes careful observation and knowing how the foot is build from the bone, muscle, and skin. Know that feet are not like hands, so the leg connecting the foot isn't going to be as flexible like arms.   STEP 3. I would like to discuss the various types of toes you can draw your feet with. Some people have feet with longer toes than the big one. Most average human feet have a normal length index toe in comparison with the big toe. Know that, men's feet are usually boxier and longer than a female's. A female will usually have softer, rounded toes to accompany the soft features of the rest of her body. Look at the wrong example of drawing a foot's toes, and see how shapeless they are. Reference, practice, and patience is all you need!   STEP 4. When a foot is perched onto the ground, the toes will expand apart, to grip onto the ground. When a foot is lifted, the toes and foot will be rested and slightly limp. This is because, when the foot is balanced onto the ground, the body's weight is being supported among the feet, putting stress on those toes, squishing the flesh into the ground. It's like if you lay down, the skin of your body will be pushed inward. Look at the wrong examples of drawing feet, and observe how different they look compared to the above examples. Notice how the grounded foot has connecting flesh from the toes to the leg. A foot will NOT be curved inwards like the below example.   STEP 5. This is basically showing you what I've discussed in the previous step, on how the toes will spread if grounded. This also displays, how a foot looks from the front. You don't see the sole, or too much of the ankle. Remember, the opposite feet will always have the big toes on the same sides of the foot, like thumbs are on hands.   STEP 6. Here is what a foot looks like from the bottom, revealing the sole and the toes. See how they are rested, and aren't spreading apart? You can tell that this is a resting position of a foot. Notice how the sole curves inwards, as the forefoot has separate lightly defined regions to indicate the bumps from undermining bones. I would advise using light defining lines for the 'padded' parts of the toes.   STEP 7. Like I've stated previously, to form a foot's accurate shape, you must draw a similar foundation. This will make it easier on your visual memory to create the articulate details and shapes that make up the foot's full form. Start off by sketching the basic shape of the pose you want to create. This should be easy, and drawn quickly. Try not to spend too much time on getting the guides drawn perfectly, otherwise, you'll be focused on the guides rather than your goal.   STEP 8. Then, slowly, work your way on the actual shape of the foot, keeping your distance with the lines of the foundation guides. Take your time, and try not to stay on the same spot for too long!   STEP 9. Next, work on the smaller details, again, taking your time. This should be much easier than the previous steps. If you need help with certain areas, retreat to the tip steps presented in the beginning of this tut.   STEP 10. Lastly, complete your feet by sketching the needed details. Use very thin line values for the lesser details, only because it will refrain from distracting the eye of the entire concept or focal point. To create a strong focal point with line weights, keep the most important lines (the outline) thicker than the inner detailing lines.   STEP 11. If you've followed the steps, you should end up with something like these. I hope you guys enjoyed this lesson, I had so much fun creating this. Feet is something I enjoy drawing on every level (they like miniature pudgy hands!). Thanks for viewing, and be sure to let me know if this has helped. I always read your comments, and seeing that this tutorial was a success, propels me to create similar tuts in the future!   Step 1. Step 2. Step 3. Step 4. Step 5. Step 6. Step 7. Step 8. Step 9. Step 10. Step 11.
